An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale has been registered east of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on Monday.
The seismic activity was registered at 22:07 JST on Monday. The tremor hit at a depth of 50 kilometres. No tsunami warning has been issued by the authorities. There are no reports of casualties or damage resulting from the quake.
A day before, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck near the southwest part of Kyushu Island at a depth of 10 kilometres.
Japan is located in a seismically active zone known as the Ring of Fire and regularly suffers from powerful earthquakes. In 2011, a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the following tsunami killed over 15,000 people and caused the Fukushima nuclear plant disaster.
