Opposition parties have questioned the propriety of the government in bringing such landslide changes when it does not have the authority to introduce a full budget, given the impending elections. The government, on its part, has justified its actions by calling it a roadmap for the next decade.

New Delhi (Sputnik): Presenting its interim budget just before the polls scheduled for April-May this year, the Indian government today announced a slew of measures promising to bring succour to the country's farmers, middle class and workforce.
The announcements made by the Narendra Modi-led government includes a waiver of taxes on personal income up to Indian rupees 500,000  ($7,000),  an incentive of Indian rupees 6,000 ($85) per annum for farmers with less than two hectares of land and a mega pension scheme for the unorganised sector workers.

The Budget is unquestionably Pro-Growth, Fiscally prudent, Pro-Farmer, Pro-Poor and strengthens the purchasing power of the Indian Middle Class.

Opposition parties led by Congress have opposed the move on the grounds of propriety.

Important clarification: the tax rebate announced by the Finance Minister is only a proposal right now, it can’t be passed until the July budget under whichever government comes to power.
