Syrian authorities managed to eliminate the attackers before they "blew themselves up" in an attack in the city of Sweida near the border with Jordan.

The death toll from the explosion in the city of Sweida in the south of Syria and an attack of militants of the Daesh* terrorist group in the east of the province Sweida rose to 144, a police source told Sputnik on Wednesday.

The source added that 178 people were injured.

The explosion occurred in a crowded public space at about 5:30 a.m. local time, or 2:30 GMT.

A terrorist attack in the city of Sweida in the south of Syria left 30 people dead, a police source told Sputnik Wednesday. An explosion occurred near the market in the city of Sweida, Syrian media reported earlier in the day.

"Thirty people are dead and [there are] wounded as a result of… [a terrorist attack] in the province of Sweida in the south of Syria," the source said.

Syria has been engulfed in a civil war since 2011, with government forces fighting numerous opposition factions and terrorist groups. The international community has taken a number of steps aimed at settling the crisis, including through negotiations in Geneva and Astana, as well as the Syrian National Dialogue Congress which took place in the Russian city of Sochi in January.

*Daesh (also known as ISIS/ISIL/IS) is a terrorist group banned in Russia
