After a bomb disposal robot examined an allegedly suspicious car near Gherkin tower in the heart of London's busy financial district, police confirmed that it was a false alarm.

The Gherkin skyscraper and surrounding buildings in the center of London were put on lockdown following reports about a suspicious vehicle nearby, according to the City of London Police.

The area has been cordoned off, with armed police coming to the scene.

People who were told to stay indoors have shared in social media photos from inside neighboring office buildings showing a bomb disposal robot operating near a parked silver car.

In the wake of investigation, police confirmed that "all road closures in the area surrounding St Mary Axe (EC3) have been lifted and the vehicle has been deemed non-suspicious," adding that the driver was detained for "possession of false identity documents."
