Revenge for Man's Love Affair in Pakistan: His Underage Sister Paraded Naked

According to police in the town of Dera Ismail Khan, where the incident occurred, the girl’s brother was having a romantic relationship with a woman outside of marriage. The village council known as a “jirga” ruled that the woman’s family could get revenge by disrespecting his sister.

In a village in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province a group of men marched a 14 year-old girl naked for an hour in revenge for her brother.

Although the jirgas are illegal in the country they are widespread in rural areas where the justice system is out of reach.

The incident occurred on the morning on October 27, when the girl was getting some water. A group of men surrounded her, stripped her naked and forced her to walk around for an hour, the police report stated.

“Unfortunately, despite pro-women legislation we see that in remote areas women are still being bartered as inanimate objects,” said Samar Minullah, a human rights activist said, The Guardian reported.

The activist further said that in Pakistan girls or women are considered as the honor of a home or a community, yet they are often faced with dishonor and barter in compensation to end family disputes. 

“This is not only illegal but un-Islamic too,” Minullah said. “I am glad police have taken action but what about the girl? She will end up living with the stigma for the rest of her life,” the activist added.

Laced With Poison

In another incident a 20-year-old woman killed 15 people from her husband’s family in the town of Muzaffargarh near the city of Multan in an attempt to poison her husband, to whom she had been forcefully married for two months.

According to police, the unhappy bride conspired with another man to escape from her loveless marriage by lacing a glass of milk with poison. After her husband refused to drink it, the milk was used to make a milk drink called lassi, which the whole family shared. 

The woman and her alleged accomplice were taken into custody shortly after the incident, police said.

Murdered for Remarrying

In 2016, a British woman of Pakistani origin Samia Shahid, was murdered on a trip to Pakistan by her father and first husband, allegedly for divorcing and remarrying in the UK without their permission.

Last month, the judge decided to move the case away from Jhelum, the town where she was killed, after her second husband, the plaintiff, made an appeal as he was afraid that he may be in danger and her family may try to influence the trial.

While the incidents are different from each other and occurred for various reasons they still boil down to one thing: the sexist and misogynistic abuse that women in Pakistan face on a daily basis.
