WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Donald Trump's administration appears to have shifted US strategy in Syria toward cooperation with Russia, as evidenced by the effectiveness of a ceasefire in the country's southwest, according to a report by the private intelligence firm Soufan Group on Tuesday.
"The ceasefire in southwest Syria that began in early July suggests the two rivals [Russia and the United States] have moved from ‘deconfliction’ to tenuous cooperation," the report stated.
In addition, the ceasefire coincides with the recent US announcement that it is shutting down a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) program to train and arm moderate rebel groups in Syria, the report explained.
The report concluded that Washington is shifting its focus toward working with Moscow to defeat the Daesh terrorist group (banned in Russia), albeit with unclear long-term consequences.
