"We’ve seen a drastic increase in illegal turnbacks since Trump was elected in November 2016. CBP [US Customs and Border Patrol] agents, perhaps emboldened by the hateful, anti-immigrant rhetoric surrounding the election have unilaterally undone decades of international diplomacy and domestic legislation by systematically denying refugees the right to seek asylum at the US-Mexico border" Erika Pinheiro, policy and technology director at Al Otro Lado, a non-profit organization providing legal services for migrants and a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said as quoted by the Guardian newspaper.
The legal groups believe that such actions, which include threatening, misleading and rejecting, put the immigrants in grave danger.
During the presidential campaign in 2016 US President Donald Trump repeatedly promised to fight illegal migration to the United States by introducing tough immigration legislation and, in particular, by constructing a wall at the US-Mexican border.
