Liberation of Mosul From Daesh to Facilitate Takeover of Syria's Raqqa
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The leadership of Daesh terrorist group (banned in Russia) has largely been decapitated in Iraq leading to infighting among the remaining Daesh fighters in Tal Afar, in Iraq's Nineveh Province, and Hawija, in the country's Kirkuk Province, Iraqi Interior Ministry Spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan said in a briefing on Thursday.

"We killed a large number of their leadership and they collapsed within their structure and they are largely fighting among themselves in Hawija and Tal Afar currently," Mann explained. "The system they [Daesh] were based on started to collapse because we got intelligence information and currently we are pursuing the remaining leaders of this organization to eliminate them also."

Mann praised the sharing of intelligence among anti-Daesh coalition allies and partners as the key to decapitating the terrorist group's leadership.

On Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi announced that Iraqi security forces had finally liberated the second largest Iraqi city after months of fighting Daesh.

Mosul fell under control of the terror group in 2014 and was since then the key Daesh stronghold in Iraq. The operation to recapture the city was launched in October 2016 by the Iraqi troops backed by the US-led international coalition. The eastern part of the city was liberated in January.
