"This Agreement is alive and we will take it forward with or without the US administration," Tajani said in a comment on the announcement by US President Donald Trump that Washington pulls out from the "unfair deal."
"The EU will continue to lead efforts against climate change and be a global pole of attraction for investment, innovation and technology, creating new jobs and boosting competitiveness," Tajani said as quoted by EP press service.
While Trump repeatedly threatened to pull out from the Paris accord during his presidential campaign, the move was not unanimously supported by the US citizens, with mayors of over 60 cities pledging to implement the deal despite president's decision.
The Paris climate deal, created within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and championed by former US President Barack Obama, was signed in 2015 by 194 countries and ratified by 143. The agreement aims at keeping the increase in average global temperature at below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. To this end, all the signatory states agreed to reduce or limit their greenhouse gas emissions.
