MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US Senator Marco Rubio denied Sunday that Russia’s alleged meddling in US elections could have affected their outcome, but stressed the nation needed to know if such attempts were made.
"I do not believe that, in any way, what they did ultimately changed the outcome of the election," Rubio said on CBS News.
"But the American people need to be made aware if in fact there is evidence that a foreign government tried to interfere with or influence the direction of our politics," he added.
US intelligence and Homeland Security Department said last month they were confident the Russian government was behind the leak of emails from Democratic National Committee (DNC) servers, which exposed the party’s attempts to undercut Hillary Clinton’s rival Bernie Sanders in the race for nomination. Russia denied the allegations, with President Putin saying stories on Russian hackers and spies were attempts to distract US voters' attention from internal issues.
