Record 77% of Americans Believe US Divided on Major Issues - Poll

An all-time high of 77 percent of Americans believe that the US is split on the most important values, a poll by the Gallup organization revealed on Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Gallup poll was conducted between November 9 and November 13, following the presidential election and the protests that erupted across the United States after the victory of Republican nominee Donald Trump in the presidential race.

"Seventy-seven percent of Americans, a new high, believe the nation is divided on the most important values, while 21% believe it is united and in agreement," the pollster said.

The poll found that despite all major subgroups in the US society agreeing that the nation is divided, Republicans were less likely to believe this at 68 percent, compared to independents at 78 percent and Democrats at 83 percent.

The survey also showed that there is an almost equal split among the respondents on whether Trump will increase unity in the country at 45 percent or will cause more division at 49 percent, However, this opinion is also connected to party preferences, with 88 percent of Republicans believing that Trump will enhance public unity and 81 percent of Democrats saying that he will cause more division.

Among independents, 51 percent that Trump will cause more division at 51 percent compared to 43 percent who believe that he will unite the country.

On November 8, Trump managed to come ahead of his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the US presidential election, securing 290 electoral votes. Trump's inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.
