WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States has officially eliminated economic sanctions against Myanmar, US President Barack Obama said in an executive order on Friday.
"US national security and foreign policy interests no longer support the blocking of assets and other measures imposed by [previous] Executive Orders," Obama stated.
Obama first announced his plans to lift the sanctions during the visit of Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi in Washington, DC in September, 2016.
The United States imposed economic and investment sanctions on Myanmar after the military junta came to power in the country in 1988.
