Stanford Swimmer Who Raped Unconscious Woman Gets Remarkably Short Sentence
Brock Allen Turner, 20, who was discovered raping an unconscious woman on the Stanford University campus in January 2015, got sentenced to six months in jail because a longer sentence would have had a ‘severe impact on him’, according to the judge.
Turner, who is from Dayton, Ohio, was discovered raping his victim behind a dumpster outside of a fraternity house. He assaulted a 23-year-old woman he allegedly met at a campus party. The woman had no memory of the incident, and was reported to have a blood alcohol level 3 times the legal limit, according to New York Magazine.
The perpetrator was tackled by a group of students that witnessed him raping her, and handed him over to the police. He should have faced five different felony charges for this single crime: one count of raping an unconscious person, one count of raping an intoxicated person, two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, and one count of assault while attempting to commit rape.
Prosecutors recommended that Turner receive a six-year prison sentence.
However, Judge Aaron Persky determined that Turner's age and lack of criminal history warranted him a much shorter sentence.
"A prison sentence would have a severe impact on him," Persky said at Turner's sentencing on Thursday. "I think he will not be a danger to others."
Turner has voluntarily withdrawn from school and has been forbidden to enter the campus.
