Five People Killed in Mogadishu Drive-By Shooting

The death toll from the shooting near the Turkish embassy in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, has gone up to five people, security officials report.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Wednesday, an armed men opened fire from a car at a van carrying Turkish and Somali nationals. The Somali driver and translator were killed in the attack, according to police sources cited by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

The Somali-based Horseed Media said citing security officials that five people, two Turkish citizens and three Somali nationals, were killed in the attack which took place in Hodan district, in northwestern Mogadishu, on Wednesday.

Earlier reports said that four people were killed in the attack.

According to the security officials cited by Horseed, four other people were injured in the attack.

The shooters have reportedly fled the scene. No extremist group active in the country has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Al-Shabaab group is a particular threat to peace and security in Somalia. It targets the government as well as neighboring countries that deploy troops in the region.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda affiliate, has been staging attacks in Somalia in an attempt to create an Islamic state ruled by strict Sharia law.
