Exactly ten years ago, Jack Dorsey launched Twitter with the words "just setting up my twttr"; since then, the micro-blogging site has evolved into the fastest social media network to react to world affairs. Today millions of users are celebrating their favorite news source's birthday and Sputnik joins in.

Ten years ago, on March 21, 2006 Twitter entered the world with a single Tweet of its co-founder Jack Dorsey:

Since then it has evolved into a large micro-blogging social network which retains every moment of everyday life people care about most – all over the world.

140-character max posts come as flash reflections of the world affairs – from 2011's Arab Spring calls to follow up of the natural disaster that devastated Japan the same year.

From personal matters like marriage proposals to online campaigns and major events.

And of course, there's also a section dedicated to viral videos and GIFs that spread across the network like wildfire.

On Monday, millions of users are celebrating their favorite news source's birthday.

The company came back to its followers, squeezing the entire thank you note into a 140-character tweet.

“Throughout the years, you’ve made Twitter what it is today and you’re shaping what it will be in the future. Thank you for making history, driving change, lifting each other up and laughing together every day,” it says in a larger message posted on its website.

“As we mark this milestone, it’s you we want to celebrate,” the company hails its followers.
