March 1st is celebrated as National Cat Day in Russia. Let’s take a moment and look at some of the most interesting and popular felines out there that caught public’s eye with their ‘kitty’ ways.

For a long time furry couch potatoes have been called the kings of the internet. The most popular cat, Maru from Japan, became famous for his love of boxes. He had over 260 million views online.

Another celebrity is the American Grumpy. He is considered to be the grumpiest cat in the world. His real name is Tardar Sauce and he has amassed millions of fans around the world.

Cats that belong to politicians are celebrated along with their owners. For example, the major catfight between the British Prime Minister’s pet ‘Larry’ and the Minister of Finance’s cat was a topic of discussion as important as any political news story.

Cats that are quite naughty sometimes fall into crime chronicles. In the Russian city of Vladivostok, for example, a homeless cat, which has since been called Cat Matroshka, with a taste for delicacies ate a large supper costing around 60 thousand rubles.

The same cat more recently committed another theft. She tried to steal a fish, this time from its owner. The fish stealing was recorded on camera. Matroshka unceremoniously climbed on the table, reached for the coffee machine and grabbed a fish carcass, which was lying on the cover of kitchen appliance.

The recording was posted on the cat’s Instagram account. It was accompanied by a headline, “Not losing my grip” #koshkamatroska!

In another case, a Bengal cat escaped from her owner at Sheremetyevo airport. According to the footage of the video the cat got into the boutique through a ventilation shaft in the ceiling.

It scattered around store bags and scarves, and then hid under the cash register zone. The amount of damage was later calculated to 200,000 rubles. A real CATastrophe!

But cats are capable of more than just petty little crimes. Just last week, Moscow city police were on the lookout for an explosive device. An unspecified amount of plastic explosives were on the loose in the Russian capital, and finding them was incredibly difficult, as they were reportedly attached to a runaway cat.

The owner allegedly called the cops, complaining that his feline friend ran away after he, for some unknown reason, decided to tie plastic explosives to its back.

But of course despite their naughtiness, which is part of their charm, cats can also act in the best interest of their owners.

One example of such a case is in the Russian city of Samara, where a cat saved its owner from robbers. The cat, which weighed 18 kilograms, scared off burglars when they tried to open the door of the owner’s apartment.

“I was shocked when I heard about it from the neighbors. That night I slept. Stepan (cat) heard a sound in the keyhole, went to the door and yelled loudly. The robbers fled, forgetting the keys in the door. Later, the police, based on this piece of evidence, managed to establish the identity of the thieves. As it turned out, acting in a similar way, the criminals ransacked several apartments.”

These kitties have achieved national fame on the Internet with thousands of fans who rejoice when their photos are uploaded and their stories shared.
