BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — The EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, establishing a political and economic association between the two, was signed in 2014. It is still to be ratified by EU member states.

Under the agreement, Ukraine has to adopt a wide range of reforms, including in the fight against corruption, public finance management, decentralization and the energy sector.

"We are very very closely following the developments in Ukraine. We believe that in this critical situation it's essential that the country's political leaders maintain focus on the important work towards reforms," Maya Kosyanchich, the spokeswoman for the EU's foreign policy chief, said at a briefing.

Earlier this month, Ukraine's main donor IMF voiced concerns that Kiev risked returning to a pattern of failed economic policies characterized by slow progress in fighting corruption and improving governance.

This came after Ukraine's Economic Development and Trade Minister Aivaras Abromavicius announced his resignation in protest over alleged attempts by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko’s administration to put obstacles in his way.
