Defeating Daesh would not root out terrorism in Syria since most of the militants fighting in the country are sympathetic to its ideology, a report said.

Double Game: Washington Escalates Campaign Against Forces Battling Daesh
Daesh "represents a continuation of a way of thinking that started before it existed and will carry on if it is defeated," according to a study by the Center on Religion and Geopolitics.

Thus "the West risks making a strategic failure by focusing only on Daesh," the report read as quoted by PressTV.

According to the report, nearly 60 percent of the militants fighting in Syria have political and religious views similar to those of Daesh. There are some 15 militant groups dedicated to fight against the Syrian Army which share the same ideology with Daesh, the think tank reported.

The US and its allies, Turkey and Saudi Arabia, have been supporting militants fighting against government forces and the Syrian people. Since the conflict broke out in 2011, they have been supplying arms and aid to the militants who are accused of numerous atrocities and war crimes.

Earlier, President Bashar Assad criticized the US, Turkey and Saudi Arabia for supporting the so-called "moderate" opposition.

"This is not opposition, this is terrorism. Opposition for us is a political movement outside or inside Syria," Assad was quoted as saying by PressTV.

According to the president, terrorists from over 100 countries are coming to Syria. In order to fight and defeat them the supplies of arms, finances and recruits for them must be stopped, Assad underscored.
