PARIS (Sputnik) – The oil-producing countries and fossil fuel industry are bound to start derailing the Paris climate talks, currently held in a constructive atmosphere, Greenpeace's head of international climate politics said Saturday.

"The atmosphere remains constructive. But that doesn’t guarantee a decent deal. Right now, the oil-producing nations and the fossil fuel industry will be plotting how to crash these talks when ministers arrive next week," Martin Kaiser stated on the COP21 sidelines in Paris.

The opponents of a robust and legally binding deal would fight against global decarbonization and shift toward renewables, he added.

"There is a whole heap of work still to do here in Paris, but as things stand our report card reads: optimistic about the process, less so about the content," Kaiser stressed.

He also reminded that during the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen an official framework agreement that failed to produce a comprehensive climate change accord had exceeded 300 pages, whereas the latest draft of the proposed text of the Paris climate deal had been whittled down to just 21 pages.

The most recent version of the draft text of the Paris Climate Agreement will be presented to the ministers on Monday.
