The recent nuclear agreement between Iran and P5+1 is a breakthrough in international politics. After decades of trying to work out the deal and two years of negotiations, countries finally managed to find a compromise.

The deal provides that Iran will not produce highly enriched uranium and weapons-grade plutonium, materials necessary to build a nuclear bomb. Moreover, Iran will remove two thirds of its installed centrifuges and get rid of 98% of its stockpile of enriched uranium.

US President Barack Obama considers the deal a great achievement.

“This deal demonstrates that American diplomacy can bring about a real meaningful change. Change that makes our country and the world more secure,” he said during his speech.

However, many Republicans are strictly opposing the agreement — often on totally ridiculous grounds. For instance, candidate for the Republican presidential nomination Jed Bush considers the agreement a dangerous and short-sighted deal, while another Republican candidate Rick Perry called the deal “one of most destructive foreign policy decisions” in his lifetime.

“No deal means no constraint on the program […]. Now you can believe this is not a good enough deal, you can even believe that the President is not accurately describing the deal. But without the deal there is no constraint,” Brad Friedman from radio Sputnik's BradCast said while discussing the results of the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

Not a Dime's Worth of Difference? Really?
However, another serious candidate for the Republican nomination, Scott Walker, backed the opinions of his counterparts and said that Iran is not a country one can do business with. He promised to terminate the “bad deal” with Iran on his very first day in office and impose tough economic sanctions against the country.

Such a position is ridiculous as negotiations have always been the most effective way to resolve the conflicts, Friedman said. Otherwise a confrontation can escalate and develop into an open military conflict, which Republicans are apparently seeking.

“I suspect that a lot of these Republicans would like that war. They would like to send your children to another war in the Middle East,” Friedman said.
