Nobody in Europe Confronts US Espionage - French Senator

In June, WikiLeaks published documents, obtained from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, revealing that the agency had spied on three French presidents: incumbent Francois Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac.

HELSINKI (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova – France needs to investigate US National Security Agency (NSA) espionage practices, Yves Pozzo di Borgo, a member of the French delegation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe Parliamentary Assembly (OSCE PA), told Sputnik.

"I think it is a big problem. Americans are spying on everyone. The problem is that no one in Europe is properly addressing the issue and confronting the United States concerning the espionage allegations. France needs to respond to the scandal and at least to follow the German example," Pozzo di Borgo said Tuesday.

He pointed out a similar move by a German federal prosecutor, who had opened an investigation into the alleged tapping of Angela Merkel's mobile phone by the NSA in June 2014.

The inquiry was closed a year later due to lack of evidence, according to the office of German Federal Prosecutor Harald Range.

Despite probe's drop, the prosecutor's office announced that an investigation into widespread spying of German telecommunications data by British and American intelligence agencies would continue.
