First MERS Death Case Reported in Germany

The first death from an outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) has been registered in Germany, DPA news agency reported Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A man, 65, from North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, spent his vacation in the United Arab Emirates in February and underwent treatment for the virus in a hospital on June 6. Representatives from the hospital in Ostercappeln told the news agency that the man was admitted too late.

A MERS outbreak has been registered in South Korea, where 19 people have died from the virus and at least 154 others have been diagnosed with the syndrome.

As of June 12, the World Health Organziation has registered 1,289 cases with 455 deaths worldwide.
