US citizens are being left alone by their own country, Zahra Billoo, executive director of CAIR San Francisco chapter, told Sputnik.
Last week, the State Department issued a travel warning urging US citizens to leave Yemen, but said there would be no US government attempt to evacuate US citizens.
Billoo highlighted that Russia, China and India evacuated their citizens from Yemen.
According to Billoo, at least 200 US nationals are currently in Yemen, adding that these people may be in real danger. She claimed that the stance of US President Barack Obama’s administration is very disappointing.
Yemen is suffering from a violent conflict between Houthi militants and government forces. The Houthis recently took control of the country's capital Sanaa, forcing President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to flee the country. Yemen's ethnic Houthis have made rapid advances into other cities.
In March, a coalition headed by Saudi Arabia launched a military operation against Houthi positions in Yemen, at the request of President Hadi.
On Tuesday, the WHO said that more than 540 people have been killed and 1,700 injured in the Yemen conflict since March 19.
The escalation of the conflict prompted several countries, including Russia, China and India to evacuate their nationals from Yemen.
