The global death toll from the coronavirus infection has topped 939,000; over 30 million cases of the infection have been detected, and over 20.2 million of those patients have recovered, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The United States still has the highest case count in the world, with 6,629,880, including 196,752 fatalities and 2,525,573 recoveries.

President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that the United States could have a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, by the middle of October - several weeks before the presidential election in early November.

POTUS also said that the US is set to distribute 100 million doses of the vaccine by the end of 2020, while the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said that the government plans to begin distributing 100 million doses of an approved coronavirus vaccine at no cost as early as January.

TASHKENT, September 17 (Sputnik) - The authorities in Uzbekistan will reopen the country’s borders for inbound and outbound travel by air, rail, and motor vehicle from October 1, a representative of the Central Asian nation’s coronavirus disease response center told Sputnik on Thursday.

The latest decision comes after the Uzbek authorities eased restrictions on the border with Kyrgyzstan on September 1.

"From October 1, it will be allowed to enter and leave Uzbekistan via all air, rail, and automotive checkpoints," a representative of the response center said.

International arrivals from countries that have been color-coded red, according to the Ministry of Health's guidance, must present a certificate showing a negative PCR test for the coronavirus disease. Furthermore, these arrivals must also complete a form ahead of a period of mandatory self-isolation.

Individuals arriving by road from Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan, after conducting an express test or an antibody test for COVID-19, must spend two weeks in self-isolation in either a hotel or a private place of residence, the response center added.

As of Thursday, 49,627 cases of COVID-19 have been registered in Uzbekistan. This figure includes the 612 new positive tests confirmed over the preceding 24 hours.

The Uzbek government has begun easing social distancing restrictions in the country since August 15. Theaters and cinemas reopened on September 5, and children began returning to school on September 14, although some minors are taking classes remotely.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - A US House resolution approved in a 243-164 vote targets threats and attacks against Asian-Americans inspired by the novel coronavirus origin in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Congresswoman Grace Meng said in a press release on Thursday.

"When the first cases of coronavirus were reported in the United States, I had advised the public about not singling out or stereotyping the Asian American community," Meng said. "But unfortunately, those efforts have not stopped acts of ignorance and bigotry from rearing their ugly heads. It's time for this hysteria and discrimination to end," Meng said.

The resolution’s text calls on federal, state and local law enforcement to investigate all credible reports of hate crimes against Asian-Americans and to prosecute those responsible.

In her release announcing the vote, Meng was especially critical of Republican leaders - citing President Donald Trump and US House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy by name - for using terms such as "Chinese virus" and "Wuhan virus" to characterize the novel coronavirus disease.

"These are more than just hateful and irresponsible words. This language has fueled the increase of threats and attacks against those of Asian descent, and many Asian Americans continue to live in fear," Meng said.

The resolution was introduced with 157 cosponsors and won support from more than 500 organizations, according to Meng.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - The COVID-19-related fatality rate in Yemen stands at an alarming 30 percent, while the number of people affected by the disease may reach up to 1 million, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Thursday.

“There are more than 2,000 confirmed [cases] of COVID-19 in Yemen, but experts estimate that there are possibly up to 1 million people impacted by the virus, with a fatality rate as high as 30 percent,” Dujarric said.

As of Thursday, Yemen had registered 2,019 cases of COVID-19 infections and 583 deaths.

However, the United Nations had previously warned that the actual COVID-19 spread in the Middle Eastern country might be much higher.

The numbers are likely to remain underreported due to the fragile health system destroyed by more than six years of conflict, the organization said.

TORONTO (Sputnik) - A spike of novel coronavirus cases in Canada could jeopardize the country’s ability to keep the spread of the pandemic at "manageable levels," Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam said in a statement on Thursday.

As of Thursday, the number of novel coronavirus cases in Canada has surpassed 140,000 with 9,199 virus-related deaths, government data revealed.

"The ongoing increase in new cases being reported daily continues to give cause for concern. With continued circulation of the virus, the situation could change quickly and we could lose the ability to keep COVID-19 cases at manageable levels," Tam said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The G20 nations believe that equal access to the vaccine against coronavirus is a key element to overcome the pandemic and sustain global economic recovery, according to a joint statement of the G20 health and finance ministers released on Thursday following their online meeting.

"We emphasize the need for a global response and the importance of taking forward our collective action to accelerate the research, development, manufacturing and distribution of COVID-19 diagnostics ... with the aim of supporting equitable and affordable access for all, which is key to overcoming the pandemic and supporting global economic recovery," the statement said.

The ministers pledged to continue to "use all available policy tools to safeguard people’s lives, jobs and incomes." The results of the meeting will be included in the updated G20 action plan to support the global economy during the pandemic and will be presented at the summit of the G20 leaders in November 2020.

The vaccine against COVID-19 developed by Russia's research center Vector does not provide life-long immunity, but guarantees immunity that will last at least six months, the head of the center's zoonotic diseases and flu department said on Thursday.

"This vaccine does not provide life-long immunity, and this is fine, as we do not introduce any changes [in our system] that will last forever ... We can now say for sure that the immunity created by this vaccine is enough for at least six months," Alexander Ryzhikov said in a live-stream on Instagram.

One can be revaccinated safely, the expert assured.

At least 3,000 volunteers will take part in the third stage of trials of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Russia's research center Vector, when its efficiency will be studied, the head of the center's zoonotic infectious and flu department said on Thursday.

"At least 3,000 volunteers will be invited to take part in the third stage, when vaccine efficiency will be studied," Alexander Ryzhikov said in a live-stream on Instagram.

World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge expressed on Thursday concerns over the COVID-19 surge in Europe, noting that weekly cases now exceeded those reported during the March peak of the pandemic, which should serve as a "wake-up call."

"We do have a very serious situation unfolding before us. Weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic first peaked in Europe in March," Kluge said at a briefing.

"Last week, the region's weekly tally exceeded 300,000 patients. More than half of European countries have reported a greater than 10-percent increase in cases in the past two weeks. Of those, seven countries have seen newly reported cases increase more than two-fold in the same period," Kluge added.

The WHO official noted that Europe's stringent public health measures paid off, with June COVID cases hitting all-time low.

"The September case numbers, however, should serve as a wake-up call for all of us. Although these numbers reflect more comprehensive testing, it also shows alarming rates of transmission across the region," Kluge warned.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex is to receive a complaint via the special Law Court of the Republic (CJR) from the "Victimes Coronavirus COVID-19 France" association for the poor management of the health crisis, lawyer Fabrice Di Vizzio representing the organization, said on Thursday.

The Law Court of the Republic is designed to try the cases of misconduct by governmental officials in France.

"This is for those who wonder why with @ AssoCovid [Victimes Coronavirus covid-19 France] we filed a complaint before the Cjr against Castex! How long will we have to put up with the guilty speeches when during this time nothing advances on the side of the state?" Di Vizzio tweeted.

The complaint invokes the 223-7 article of France’s Penal Code, which includes the voluntary failure "to take or provoke measures… to combat a disaster likely to create a danger to the safety of persons".

Di Vizzio has also participated in a probe against former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, former Health Minister Agnes Buzyn and incumbent Health Minister Olivier Veran over their handling of the coronavirus crisis from its beginning. The CJR received over ninety complaints in the spring. The accusations included the shortage of face masks and the necessary equipment to treat the COVID-19 patients.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) considers inoculating its population with the first Russian vaccine against COVID-19 once trials are completed, Joseph Kindundu Mukombo, economic counselor at the country’s embassy in Moscow, said.

Russia registered the world's first COVID-19 vaccine, dubbed Sputnik V, in August. According to the Russian Health Ministry, Sputnik V is safe and has proven to be capable of building immunity against the virus. The vaccine is in Phase 3 of clinical trials.

"We are glad that finally there is a vaccine, because this disease made a lot of damage, so it’s good news for us that this vaccine Sputnik V is there. Good luck to this vaccine. We hope that the trials which are underway will show its efficiency, so that we could probably use it for our population," Mukombo said, noting that the DRC Health Ministry is in contact with Russian consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor on the matter.

South Africa will ease a number of coronavirus-related restrictions amid "gradual, but steady, decline in new infections, hospitalisations and deaths" and move to alert level 1, President Cyril Ramaphosa said.

"Cabinet decided this morning that the country should move to alert level 1. The move to alert level 1 will take effect from midnight on Sunday 20 September 2020 ... The move to alert level 1 will mean a further easing of restrictions on gatherings," Ramaphosa said on Wednesday, as quoted on the government's website.

In particular, starting from Sunday, indoor gatherings of up to 250 people and outdoor public events of up to 500 people will be permitted, while the maximum number of those who may attend a funeral is increased from 50 to 100.

"Venues for exercise, recreation and entertainment – such as gyms and theatres – which were limited to no more than 50 people, will now be allowed to accommodate up to 50% of their venue’s capacity as determined by available floor space, subject to social distancing and other health protocols," the leader added.

In addition, from 1 October, South will gradually ease restrictions on international travel, allowing people to travel into and out of the country for business, leisure and other purposes. At the same time, trips to and from certain countries that have high infection rates may be restricted.
