COVID-19 Live Updates: Number of Confirmed Coronavirus Cases on Global Scale Exceeds 6.6Mln - WHO

The death toll from the global coronavirus pandemic has reached 394,000; over 6.73 million cases of infection have been detected, and almost 2.74 million of those patients have recovered, according to Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins University, which tracks and compiles data from national and local authorities, the media and other sources.

The United States still has the highest case count in the world, with 1,897,838, including 109,143 fatalities and 491,706 recoveries.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump urged the governors of some US states to end the "blanket lockdown" they had imposed in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic on 11 March.

SEOUL (Sputnik) - The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Korea has risen by 57 to 11,776 over the past day, marking the second consecutive day the daily increment is above 50, the Health Ministry's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said.

Previous reports indicated that the day before, the tally rose by 51 to 11,719.

Out of 57 new cases, 53 resulted from the internal transmission, according to the center. Twenty-seven new cases have been recorded in the capital of Seoul, 19 in the province of Gyeonggi, and 6 in the city of Incheon among others.

KCDC noted that a total of 10,552 people recovered from the disease. The death toll has not changed over the past day and stands at 273 people.

In early April, the daily increase in coronavirus cases in South Korea dropped below 40, later stabilizing at about 10-20 cases. On 6 May, it dipped to two cases. However, later, the authorities discovered a new cluster linked to a young man who visited several clubs in Itaewon and tested positive for COVID-19 on 6 May. Since then, several more clusters have been registered.

BEIJING (Sputnik) - China has registered six new coronavirus cases across the country over the past 24 hours, with no people having died of the disease, the National Health Commission said.

According to the authorities, five out of six new cases are imported, while one registered in Hainan province is local. Meanwhile, a total of three patients recovered over the past day.

The authorities also reported about five new asymptomatic cases.

Overall, China now has a total of 83,036 confirmed coronavirus cases, 1,776 of them imported. In total, 78,332 people have recovered from COVID-19 in the country, while the death toll stands at 4,634.

The number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong stands at 1,105 people, with four patients having died and 1,048 more having been discharged from hospitals. Forty-five people have been infected with the disease in Macao, and all of them have already been released from medical facilities. The number of infected people in Taiwan amounts to 443, with seven of them having died and 429 others recovered.

The entire territory of China is now a zone with low epidemiological threat after the threat level was lowered in the northeastern province of Jilin, according to the country's authorities.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) - Mexico registered almost 3,600 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to over 113,000 while the country’s COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 13,500 according to the Ministry of Health.

"The increase over the past 24 hours was 3.3% - 3,593 new cases were registered. The total number of COVID-19 cases [confirmed] since the start of the epidemic has reached 113,619," Jose Luis Alomia, the director of epidemiology at Mexico’s Ministry of Health, said during a Saturday press conference, broadcast on Twitter.

Mexico’s COVID-19 death toll stands at 13,511 while another 1,189 suspected coronavirus deaths are under verification. There are currently 19,278 active coronavirus cases in the country.

A week ago, Mexico had around 90,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and over 9,000 COVID-19 fatalities. The weekly increase in the number of cases has remained stable (at around 23,000), but the death toll is climbing faster now: a weekly increase of 2,500 deaths reported last Sunday, while in the course of this week the death toll rose by around 4,000.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Places of worship in the United Kingdom will reopen for individual prayer this month, as the government continues to ease coronavirus restrictions, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick said.

"Pleased to announce that from 15 June, places of worship will be able to open for individual prayer. Thank you to all the faith leaders who are working with me to ensure this is done safely. I know that for millions across the country this news has been long awaited," Jenrick wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

The United Kingdom introduced coronavirus lockdown measures on 23 March, places of worship were then closed across the country.

In mid-May, the United Kingdom launched its 5-level coronavirus alert system to monitor the situation concerning the COVID-19 outbreak. The country is now at level 4, meaning that transmission is still relatively high. The government says that the United Kingdom is "transitioning" to level 3, which means the epidemic is in "general circulation."

According to the Johns Hopkins University’s coronavirus count, there are now over 286,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom and the country’s COVID-19 death toll stands at over 40,500.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has delivered a fresh batch of aid to conflict-ridden Yemen amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"Despite all the odds, UNICEF_Yemen continue to airlift supplies to Yemen, these supplies are essential to curb the spread of COVID19 in the country. Today, a new plane landed in Aden airport full with medical supplies including Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) items," UNICEF said on Twitter on Saturday.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are over 480 confirmed coronavirus cases in Yemen and the country’s COVID-19 death toll stands at over 110. However, according to the Unived Nations, the figures could be considerably higher as the country's testing capabilities are limited.

Yemen is suffering from a massive humanitarian crisis considered by the United Nations to be the worst in the world. The country has been gripped by an internal conflict between government forces and the Houthi movement. A Saudi-led coalition has launched an air campaign against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

A spokesperson of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) told Sputnik in May that the number of Yemeni children facing acute malnutrition might considerably increase from an already high figure of over two million in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) - Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi announced on Saturday that the country's authorities decided to prolong curfew in the country to curb the spread of COVID-19 after 33 new deaths were registered over the past day, the prime minister's press service said in a statement.

As of Friday, Iraq's COVID-19 tally has risen by 1,252 to 11,098, while the death toll now stands at 318. A total of 4,904 people fully recovered from the disease.

"The curfew has been extended for a week from Sunday to Saturday, June 13. A partial curfew will be imposed from June 14 from 06:00 p. m. to 05:00 a. m., with a full curfew maintained on Thursday, Friday and Saturday," the statement said.

The Iraqi Health Ministry announced on 18 May the isolation regime in six districts of Baghdad for two weeks, as well as the start of a large-scale operation to identify new clusters of COVID-19 in connection with an increase in the spread of the coronavirus in the capital.

The country has imposed curfew, most mosques and churches remain closed, as well as entertainment venues, mass gatherings of citizens are prohibited, and restaurants operate in delivery mode.

ANKARA (Sputnik) - Turkey confirmed over 870 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, while the death toll increased by more than 20 people in that period, Turkish Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca said.

Turkey now has a total of 169,218 confirmed coronavirus cases with 878 new cases registered on Saturday, Koca wrote on Twitter. The total COVID-19 death toll in the country is 4,669 (21 new deaths were reported on Saturday).

Over 135,300 people have recovered from COVID-19 in Turkey with 1,922 new recoveries reported on Saturday, according to the health minister.

Earlier this week, Turkey’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoglu announced that his country was planning to restore air travel with 40 countries this week.

Two weeks ago, Turkey had over 156,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and the country’s COVID-19 death toll stood at over 4,300.

BEIRUT (Sputnik) - The Saudi Health Ministry said on Saturday it registered record 3,121 new COVID-19 cases over the past day, taking the total number of cases in the country to 98,869.

According to the ministry, a total of 34 people died from the disease in the past 24 hours, and the death toll now stands at 676.

The number of recoveries in the country has risen by 1,175 to 71,791.

On Thursday, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud announced that Saudi Arabia decided to donate $500 million to support global efforts in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic and develop a vaccine against the disease.

MOSCOW, June 6 (Sputnik) - More than 118,000 new coronavirus cases were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on Saturday, and the overall global tally of cases reached 6,663,304, the WHO said.

At the same time, over 5,600 new coronavirus-related fatalities were reported to the WHO over the given period, taking the global death toll to 392,802.

The Americas continue to lead in the number of overall coronavirus cases, with over 3.1 million cases. The Americas is followed by Europe, with over 2.2 million COVID-19 cases.

Indonesia has confirmed 993 new cases of the coronavirus over the past 24 hours, the highest daily increase since the outbreak, amid the gradual lifting of quarantine measures across the country, the Health Ministry said on Saturday.

According to the ministry, the update brings the country's toll of COVID-19 cases to 30,514.

Meanwhile, the death toll has reached 1,801 and the number of recoveries has increased to 9,907, the ministry added.

Russia is working hard to improve the epidemiological situation amid the coronavirus pandemic and lift the lockdown as soon as possible, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday.

"We are aiming to get out of the situation [lockdown] as quickly as possible, calmly, but as soon as possible," Putin said during an online meeting with cultural workers.

The president also said that the process of lifting restrictions on the work of cultural sites should be organized without "excessive bureaucracy."

Russia has so far confirmed 458,689 COVID-19 cases, 221,388 recoveries and 5,725 coronavirus-related deaths.

Russia has registered 8,855 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, compared to 8,726 recorded on Friday, and the total count rose to 458,689 cases, the national coronavirus response center said on Saturday.

"Over the past 24 hours, Russia has confirmed 8,855 COVID-19 cases in 84 regions, of which 3,265 (36.9 percent) have been detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms," the response center said in a statement.

Russia has so far recorded 458,689 cases of the disease in 85 regions, the center added.

Of all the new cases, the majority has been registered in Moscow — 1,992. It is followed by 758 cases in the Moscow Region and 347 cases in St. Petersburg, compared to 1,855, 762 and 378 cases, respectively, registered on Friday. Moscow's daily increase is below 2,000 for already four days in a row.

Meanwhile, the country's death toll related to the coronavirus has grown by 197, compared to 144 on Friday, to 5,725.

Germany has confirmed 407 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, with the total count reaching 183,678, the Robert Koch Institute said on Saturday.

The death toll has grown by 33 to 8,646 people within the same period of time.

A day earlier, the country confirmed 475 new cases and 30 fatalities.

About 168,900 COVID-19 patients have recovered in Germany since the beginning of the outbreak.
