Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock has been informing the UNSC about the humanitarian situation in Douma, Syria.

"We must ensure safe, unimpeded and sustained access, so we can help people in those hard to reach areas who are in the greatest need," he said.

Mark Lowcock told the UN Security Council that the situation in Idlib, Syria, is "alarming," with airstrikes, clashes between armed groups, overcrowding and severely overstretched basic services.

He emphasized that the government had asked the UN to provide aid after it retook the formerly rebel-held Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta, with the organization subsequently releasing $16 million.

Lowcock reiterated the UN's request to facilitate accessibility, saying that the government has approved a convoy to aid 70,000 people in Douma, but that "facilitation letters have not been provided."

The Committee has been holding an open meeting to encourage member states to arrange their efforts in the field of countering terrorist narratives within the framework and the guidelines contained in resolution 2354 (2017).

The meeting includes sharing information on trends and developments in terrorist narratives, effective measures to counter them, as well as ways to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of such measures.

Earlier in April, the UN Security Council held a meeting at Russia's request in order to discuss the situation in Syria, which is dedicated to the humanitarian situation in Raqqa, as well as the Al-Rukban refugee camp on the border with Jordan.
