CIS Foreign Ministers Council Session Underway in Bishkek

A meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Foreign Ministers Council has started in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Friday.

BISHKEK (Sputnik) – The ministers are first meeting in a narrow format and will then discuss 16 different issues relating to multilateral CIS cooperation in an extended format.

The CIS Foreign Ministers Council session is part of the CIS summit which is underway in Bishkek on September 16-17.

The CIS is a regional organization formed during the breakup of the Soviet Union. It includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Georgia left the CIS in 2008. Ukraine and Turkmenistan are associate members of the organization.
