The P-5 nations will discuss their nuclear doctrines at the meeting on October 6 in New York, US Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller announced on Thursday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Officials of the P-5 nations, namely United States, Russia, China, France, and Great Britain, will hold their first ever formal discussion of their nuclear doctrines in October, Gottemoeller said.

"I am gratified and delighted that we agreed to convene a P-5 meeting on October 6 in New York on the margins of the UN First Committee to discuss our respective nuclear doctrines," Gottemoeller said on Thursday after the group of nations concluded two days of discussions in Washington, DC.

Gottemoeller added that having P-5 officials getting together as a group to discuss nuclear policy is a true innovation.

On September 14-15, the United States hosted the five Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty nuclear-weapon states to review progress on disarmament and nonproliferation obligations.

The UN Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons took effect in 1970 and has been ratified by 191 governments.
