"US citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take appropriate steps to bolster their personal security," the message, published Sunday, said.
According to the message, the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group "called on its supporters to attack foreigners, particularly in coalition partner countries" in response to the US-conducted airstrikes against the militant group.
The Islamic State militants and ISIL-affiliated groups have claimed responsibility for several recent attacks around the world.
On November 20, ISIL-affiliated gunmen stormed the Radisson Blu Hotel in the Malian capital of Bamako, taking 170 people hostage, mostly foreigners. At least 19 were killed.
On November 13, 130 people were killed and over 350 injured in suicide bombings and shootings at a football stadium, a concert hall and restaurants in the French capital. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Two suicide bombings hit the outskirts of the Lebanese capital of Beirut on November 12, killing at least 43 people.
On October 31, a plane operated by the Russian Kogalymavia airline crashed in the Sinai Peninsula en route from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg, as a result of a terrorist act. All 224 people on board were killed. ISIL claimed responsibility for downing the plane.
