UNITED NATIONS, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern over the possible use of cluster bombs in the Ukrainian internal conflict and stressed the importance of refraining from using prohibited weapons, Ban's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Tuesday.

"The reports of use of cluster bombs are obviously extremely alarming. We've seen them. The Secretary General reiterates his call for an end of use of these indiscriminate weapons and the importance a world free of cluster bombs," the spokesperson said.

"It's also an occasion to reiterate the Secretary General's call for a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine," Dujarric added.

On Monday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) released a report, accusing the Ukrainian forces of using cluster munitions during an October 2 attack on eastern Ukraine's Donetsk, controlled by pro-independence forces. On Tuesday, Kiev dismissed the accusations as groundless and lacking evidence.

The HRW's deputy director for the Europe and central Asia division has told RIA Novosti that the body will continue to press the Ukrainian government to join the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions, banning the use, production or transfer of this kind of weapons.
