LONDON, August 20 (RIA Novosti) – The alleged execution of US journalist James Foley, shown in an online video by the Islamic State militant group, may have been carried by a British national, who is yet to be identified, British Prime Minister David Cameron announced Wednesday.
“We have not identified the individual responsible, but from what we have seen it looks increasingly likely that it is a British citizen. This is deeply shocking,” Cameron said.
Following the reports on the apparent beheading of the US journalist, the British prime minister was forced to cut short his holiday in Cornwall and come back to his Downing Street office in London to discuss the current situation in Syrian and Iraq.
The Islamic State militant group, formerly known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) released Tuesday a graphic video online, showing the alleged execution of journalist Foley, taken prisoner by armed men in Syria in 2012. The man featured in the video, entitled “A Message to America,” speaks in British-accented English. According to the militant the execution was in retaliation for airstrikes against the IS rebels approved by US President Barack Obama earlier this month.
The FBI currently believes that a video showing the beheading of US journalist James Foley by Islamic State (IS) militants is authentic. Foley’s family confirmed his death.
