The trouble started after local residents marched along the city streets to the entrance to the central cemetery, where they held a meeting near a memorial to the victims of the dictatorship. A group of people in masks started throwing Molotov cocktails at military police surrounding the cemetery. The police had to use water cannons to disperse the crowd. Several people were arrested.
A series of public meetings in memory of the victims of the 1973 military coup and former President Salvador Allende, who committed suicide during an assault on the presidential palace, were held in Santiago on Sunday.
Pinochet, 89, is currently under investigation for embezzling more than $30 million and evading taxes. His wife and younger son were recently released on bail after being charged with complicity in the crime and concealing the money. The Chilean parliament is soon expected to vote in favor of stripping the former dictator of his immunity.
