The United States is celebrating Independence Day, marking 244 years since the Continental Congress established it as a new nation, independent from the British crown. This year, people are holding mass rallies, festivals, and concerts across the country despite mounting concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

US President Donald Trump is hosting the "2020 Salute to America" on the South Lawn of the White House and Ellipse on 4 July. According to authorities, this year's Independence Day celebration will have a "different look than 2019 to ensure the health and safety of those attending".

The president is expected to address the nation, and in the evening the celebration will be concluded with a large fireworks display.
