According to White House advisor, Donald Trump counts on the US Congress to act and secure the funding for the construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) President Donald Trump counts on the US Congress to act and secure the funding for the construction of a wall on the US border with Mexico, White House advisor Kellyanne Conway said in an interview on Thursday.

"Just the prospect of the wall being built, has resulted in the decrease of illegal border crossing," Conway told Fox News. "[Trump] is telling Congress he is building the wall, he expects the funding, and it's up to them collaboratively."

Trump 'Absolutely' Still Wants Mexico to Pay for Border Wall
On Tuesday, Trump threatened during a rally in Phoenix, Arizona a government shutdown if Congress does not include sufficient funding for a wall on the US border with Mexico in the appropriations bill.

Constructing the wall to curb illegal immigration and combat drug trafficking has been Trump's signature pledge on the campaign trail. Shortly after taking office in January, the US president signed an executive order to initiate the project.

According to the Justice Department, the rate of illegal crossings on the southern border has significantly dropped since Trump's tenure in the White House.
