California Retains Death Penalty, Speeds Up Executions
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The voter-approved legislation is being put on hold until the court considers a lawsuit from its opponents, The Sacramento Bee said on Tuesday.

The Death Penalty Procedures Initiative, also called Proposition 66, was approved on November 8, 2016. A day after the approval, plaintiffs John Van de Kamp, a former California Attorney General, and Ron Briggs, a former El Dorado County supervisor, filed a lawsuit against the measure arguing that it was unconstitutional.

The state of California has the largest death row in the United States with almost 750 persons. The executions have not been taken place in the state since 2006, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
