“Nicholas Young, 37, of Fairfax [Virginia], who was formerly employed as a police officer with the Metro Transit Police Department, was indicted today by a federal grand jury on charges of attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and obstruction of justice,” Thursday’s release stated.
During a multiyear investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Young met with the release described as a “confidential human source” posing as a Daesh recruit. In 2014, Young advised this individual on altering travel to avoid detection by authorities, steer clear of informants and refrain from discussing plans with others.
On July 28 of this year, according to court documents cited in the release, Young bought and sent 22 digital gift card codes to an undercover FBI agent, thinking they would be used for mobile-messaging accounts used by Daesh in recruiting new members.
If convicted, Young faces a maximum of 60 years in federal prison, the release noted.
