MOSCOW (Sputnik) — US presidential candidates Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton head to the election day as the two most unfavorably viewed presidential candidates in the eye of US citizens since 1956, according to Gallup's 10-point favorability scale published on Tuesday.

"Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton head into the final hours of the 2016 presidential campaign with the worst election-eve images of any major-party presidential candidates Gallup has measured back to 1956…. Trump's image is worse than Clinton's, however, with 61% viewing him negatively on the 10-point scale compared with 52% for her," Gallup said in a statement.

The latest results reflect similar results of the same poll in June, when the two candidates emerged as their respective parties' presumptive nominees. Thus, according to the pollster, the 2016 US presidential elections will feature the two most unpopular candidates since 1956 and the two most negatively reviewed US presidential candidates of the modern era.

The respondents of Gallup's historical favorability 10-point scale were allowed to use any number from +1 to +5 to show their favorable view of the candidate, with +5 being the highest point, similarly they can use the negative scale to indicate their unfavorable view with —5 being the lowest unfavorable rank.
