The accident occurred in the city of Hoboken during the Thursday morning rush hour.

The New Jersey Transit Corporation said there were "multiple injuries", many critical.

The train failed to stop and pulled in the rail station, causing major damage. Emergency services arrived at the scene.

A local medical examiner's office confirmed one death, and a spokesman for a local hospital said two people brought there had died, NBC News reported.

Other media reports cited law enforcement officials as saying multiple passengers remain trapped in the busy station.

The train went through the station and ticket barriers and "into the reception area", according to a local radio report.

It does not appear the crash of a New Jersey train was terror related or deliberate, US media reported citing law enforcement officials.
