WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Additionally, officials identified five new travel-related Zika cases in Florida as well as the infection of one nonresident who contracted the virus in Miami-Dade County.

Last week, Florida officials declared the city of Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood safe for travelers. Also, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that low numbers of mosquitoes have been found in local traps since early August.

Florida is the only US state with locally transmitted cases of Zika.

The current Zika outbreak began in Brazil in 2015. Although the virus is not believed to cause serious complications for healthy adults, it can lead to severe brain defects in newborn babies.
