The United States should delay gun sales to people on the terrorist watch lists while they are investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National Rifle Association (NRA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The statement comes after Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced he would meet with the leading gun rights group to discuss gun control, particularly a loophole that allows people on terror watch lists to purchase weapons.

"Anyone on a terror watchlist who tries to buy a gun should be thoroughly investigated by the FBI and the sale delayed while the investigation is ongoing," the NRA said. "If an investigation uncovers evidence of terrorist activity or involvement, the government should be allowed to immediately go to court, block the sale, and arrest the terrorist."

On Sunday, US national Omar Mateen, 29, shot and killed 49 people and injured at least 53 inside a crowded gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. According to authorities, Mateen legally purchased weapons used in the shooting despite being previously investigated by US law enforcement for possible ties to terrorist organizations

US citizens on the terrorist watch list were able to buy weapons in 91 percent of cases in 2015, according to a report released earlier on Wednesday by Senator Dianne Feinstein.
