A tropical storm is developing off the East Coast of the United States, and a warning has been issued on Friday afternoon for the US state of South Carolina, the National Weather Service said in a weather alert.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The alert noted that the storm is likely to impact the states of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

"Environmental conditions are favorable for this system to become a tropical cyclone later today or Saturday," the alert stated.

Tropical storms can have sustained winds of between 39 and 73 miles per hour.
