WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Impeachment of US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner John Koskinen is part of a political agenda, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew stated in a press release on Tuesday.
"[T]he House of Representatives… should keep its focus on the needs of the American people, not the kind of political agenda that an impeachment vote here would represent," Lew stated.
On Tuesday, members of House Judiciary Committee will hear the findings of an investigation into the top US tax official done by the House Oversight and Reform Committee. The investigation was the result of an impeachment resolution against Koskinen in October of 2015.In 2013, the US Congress investigated the IRS for allegedly subjecting conservative groups to undue scrutiny when applying for tax-exempt status. Koskinen is accused of withholding emails relevant to that investigation.
