WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Amnesty International USA Interim Executive Director Margaret Huang stated that Georgia Governor Nathan Deal must overturn the execution and stop all future executions from happening in the future.
"Georgia is scheduled to execute Brian Terrell tonight at 7 p.m., which would make for the final US execution for the year," the release stated.
In June 1992, 47-year-old Terrell was convicted of beating 70-year-old John Watson, a friend of his mother’s, just days after Watson found out Terrell had written him checks on Watson’s bank account amounting to $8,700.
"Should Terrell’s execution go forward, it will be the 28th execution to be carried out in the US this year," the release pointed out.
Amnesty International USA denounced the execution, while noting that "this is the lowest number of executions since 1991 — last year’s number was 35."
