Former Defense Secretary Warns US is Pushing Towards Nuclear Apocalypse

The United States is on the brink of a new nuclear arms race that will elevate the risk of nuclear apocalypse to Cold War levels, former Secretary of Defense William Perry warned on Thursday.

Perry, who from 1994 to 1997 served as Pentagon chief under President Bill Clinton, delivered his remarks at an event hosted by the Defense Writers Group

"We're now at the precipice, maybe I should say the brink, of a new nuclear arms race," he said. "This arms race will be at least as expensive as the arms race we had during the Cold War, which is a lot of money."

The Pentagon is starting a major overhaul of its nuclear triad, made up of bomber, submarine and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) nuclear options. Perry called for the breaking of the triad by dismantling the ICBM stockpile.

ICBMs, he said, "aren't necessary … they're not needed. Any reasonable definition of deterrence will not require that third leg."

In an August assessment, the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments projects that it will cost more than $700 billion over the next 25 years to recapitalize the nuclear triad.

Perry said spending that money is foolish considering the United States is both short of cash for other programs and capable of a robust nuclear deterrence already, Defense News reported.

The risk of nuclear war is exacerbated by the deterioration of the relationship between Moscow and Washington that had been formed after the fall of the Soviet Union. Without clear military-to-military communication between those two nations, the risk of an accidental conflict increases, Perry said.

"Today – probably I would not have said this 10 years ago – but today we now face the kind of dangers of a nuclear event like we had during the Cold War, an accidental war," he said.

"I see an imperative: to stop this damn nuclear arms race from accelerating again."

I would think that america would like to see the ICBM removed. the reason being that they would be virtually unscathed at home by a nuclear attack. They have enough Missiles stacked in Europe and other bases around the world to take on Russia China and anybody else who steps out of americas line. ICBM's make americans think twice

You cannot talk sense or logic to these criminals. They are hell bent on world dominance at any cost. These hypocrites talk about eliminating nuclear weapons purely as a propaganda PR ploy, just as they tout the freedom, democracy and human rights propaganda, as if they really believe in any one of those attributes.

Look last time the USSR lost because of the loss of credibility of the communist economic system and thus not ble to maintain that spending level. Now US society is failing its middle class and record inequality are threatening its fabric. US defense spending is more or less at the level of the sum of the next 15 nations or 5% of world population is about 30-40% of world defense spending. Please take into account that all sort of funding gimmicks keep the nuclear weapons (Energy Department), Transport Safety Authority of the security/defense budget. The US sovereign debt is more or less exploding and future unfunded liabilities are actually several times that amount. The US defense equipment contracting i terms of price/performance has completely gone haywire. B1B, B2, F22 and most probably the F35 shortly are built in actually too small numbers to justify their development cost and that same development cost is forcing to cut procurement to ridiculous low numbers. The navy has the same problem with their littoral combat ships. This problem seems inherent to the procurement and budget allocation system in the US and the prowess of manufactures to allocate parts production to as many as possible electoral districts makes those programs impossible to cancel. The end result is that within a decade the second cold war may actually end but with a result reverse to the first cold war.

hopscotch64, Absolutely! I have been convinced for years that these maniacs will not hesitate to launch a nuclear first strike against Russia and/or China if they think they the US Government, not so much the American People, but they themselves won't be seriously harmed as a result. Of course this is absolute insanity, but you see these people don't have exactly a good grip on reality to begin with.

JPH, It is hard to imagine just how utterly corrupt and incompetent the American military procurement system actually is unless you have seen it from the inside, and I have. Let's hope you're correct and the system collapses under the weight of its own corruption before they have the chance of plunging the whole planet into a nuclear holocaust.

Randall Lee Hilburn, Yes, exactly, I think. That is the quid. The world is governed by a bunch of idiots who are convinced that this is a game and that they themselves will survive in their bunkers once nuclear bombs are flying all over.

Nothing further from the reality but that is what these leaders believe, unbelievable, but true.

I am an absolute ignorant, but for example, as US Geologists have been warning for so long but to no avail, a tiny, tiny nuclear bomb (already in US soil) dropped at Yellowstone, and bye-bye North America. Or, how could these leaders imagine they themselves will survive in an atmosphere without oxygen? They are so out of touch with reality that they believe they are the only ones to drop an atomic bomb. Go figure. They have no understanding that most atomic bombs are undeclared.

Which, in my opinion, is the main and even THE only reason why 7,400,000,000 souls living today have no option other than support Mr. Putin and the Russian leadership.

Well he is right about the race, but I short term it would not be of high risk

Echoing what President Putin has said all along....... Russia never considered an arms race in the first place, but the US continued pushing and shoving and baiting and meddling and testing orange revolutions and shoving NATO closer and closer ... trashing all Treaties ....all aimed at Russia and surrounding and aiming their so-called missile shields at the Bear -- !

So Russia had no option but to begin preparing to defend herself for what could become the inevitable -- ! Yet, apart from its defense of Syria and protecting its interests in the Bay of Tartuz, when last has Russia been at war with any other nation? That is apart from defence of its own in Chechnya and in Georgia -- another Bush fiasco?

While the US has not ceased warring actively against so many unfortunate, lesser countries all over the planet since the end of WWII.... the US through all this continued nhaff-nhaffing around Russia's heels all the time -- while continuing throughout the years to spread lies about Russia --- the one country which will NEVER bow down to the USA -- Bloody sad -- if the US only knew what an ally they would have had in Russia -- but then, recognising her as an equal and even superior in many ways -- that is what they could not and cannot live down -- its sticks them in the craw like a hot poker! -- They always have to be King Kong! This, while Russia has no problem to congratulate and celebrate any form of US advancement or achievement -- in whatever field!

Jeez, bloody America --- GROW UP! You're not the only country on the planet -- if you want to be --- Go find another planet and leave us to all live in peace and harmony!

No way. ICBM's played a starring role in so many Hollywood Movies, they are like the major Hollywood stars of Nuclear War Annihilation, and US-Russian confrontation bringing an end to the world.

We have War Games (1983), The Soldier (1982), The Day After (1983), Miracle Mile (1988), and even the Short Circuit (1986) robot, was supposed to be an attack weapon against Moscow.

How can the US possibly present a credible Nuclear War deterrent, without all those Air Force guys, sitting in their Minot, North Dakota missile silos, ready to turn the key or not, on orders of the president, at DEFCON 1?
    • goaismine
the US is forcing Russia to step up it's nuclear arsenal no doubt whatsover
this leaves Russia the option incl. the " DEATH HAND " to do a major
" hit to kill " on the US Main-Land it should be clear by now that Russia would not hold back
and knock out the US first before attacking the US bases around Russia
make no mistake ! Attack Russia and it was your last mistake you have made withtin
      the 21th Centuary !

I agree with Pam Rieli. The coming war will not be accidental. It is a planned event meant to take the world to the next stage of global governance. I believe it was suppose to have happened by now but President Putin refuses to fall into that trap, but the onslaught is relentless and ubiquitous. How long can he stop the inevitable. Order from chaos order from chaos.
    • It it happens,it happens. Its time for a New leadership(Russia-China) replacing the Satanic West.
