The couple "briefly went on the loose" at about 2 PM, a circus spokesman told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

After their escape, the animals ran through busy city streets for about an hour, much to the astonishment of people passing by who were hardly accustomed to hoofbeats as being a typical part of traffic symphony. Some of the witnesses filmed and took photos of the runaways and spread them via social media.

The adventure, however, didn't last long. The zebras were recaptured by local police at 3 PM.

"Zebras in custody," police said on their Twitter account. "They are already sporting old-timey prisoner getup ahead of trial and sentencing. Have faith, fellas."

Another, more serious incident occurred at the UniverSoul Circus show not long ago. A 19-year-old trapeze artist injured his lower back after falling into the crowd during a performance.

According to police, the performer fell about 30 feet from his apparatus on October 31. Circus officials said no one in the crowd was wounded and the trapeze artist was expected to make a full recovery.
