Representative Paul Ryan on Tuesday agreed to run for House speaker as long as his fellow Republicans meet certain conditions, according to lawmakers at a closed-door House Republican Conference meeting.

Ryan, of Wisconsin, is expected to announce that he will seek to take over for former speaker John Boehner only if he has the nearly unanimous support of his GOP colleagues, the Washington Post reports.

Ryan feels that a speaker who starts with uncertain political capital would face a constant threat of intraparty reprisals, lawmakers told the paper.
