The police officer who was responding to a stabbing incident in the town of Sunset, Louisiana, was shot dead by the suspect, The Advocate reports citing St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The sheriff identified the killed officer as Henry Nelson, 51, the magazine said on Wednesday.

KLFY-TV reported on Wednesday that the Sunset police officer was killed with his own weapon.

The shooter stabbed three other people, killing one of them, prior to driving his car into the Jr. Food Mart in Sunset, a town located about 70 miles west of Louisiana’s capital Baton Rouge, on Wednesday afternoon.

KLFY-TV said that Shaterral Johnson, the Mayor of Grand Coteau, a town in the St. Landry Parish in Louisiana, has confirmed that her sister Shameka was one of the three women stabbed and that she died from the wounds. The other two victims — the mayor’s second sister and the suspect’s wife —are being treated at local hospitals.

The Advocate cited Shaterral Johnson as saying the suspect, Harrison Lee Riley Jr., 35, is her cousin and that he was allegedly on drugs during the Wednesday incident, which took place at a family residence.

Riley has been taken to a Lafayette hospital for treatment after police used tear gas against him, according to The Advocate.

Police resorted to tear gas after the shooter barricaded himself at a gas station food mart, about three blocks from the house where the stabbing took place.

The suspect drove his vehicle into the mini-mart, where the store owner, the cook and a customer were present at the time, according to local police. They all made it out safely, but the suspect refused to come out, so police used tear gas to get him out of the convenience store, a St. Landry Parish sheriff told reporters on Wednesday.

The incident comes in the wake of the July shooting in Louisiana, when 59-year-old John Russel Houser opened fire at The Grand Theatre in the city of Lafayette, killing two women prior to taking his own life.
