WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Congress should pass new regulations to help solve the problem of gun violence in the United States that has become widespread, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said in a briefing on Wednesday.
"While there is no piece of legislation that will end all violence in this country, there are some common sense things that only Congress can do that we know would have a tangible impact in reducing gun violence in this country," Earnest said.
The press secretary made the statement commenting on the Wednesday morning incident, when a man fatally shot a WDBJ7 television station reporter and cameraman in the US state of Virginia.
"This is another example of gun violence that is becoming all too common in communities large and small all across the United States," Earnest said.
Gun violence in the United States causes thousands of deaths annually. At present, the United States has an estimated 283 million guns in civilian hands.
