New York City Street Swallowed By Sinkhole
A giant sinkhole has opened on a New York City street in Brooklyn, the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said in a statement via Twitter.
NEW YORK (Sputnik) — The approximately 20 by 20 foot sinkhole formed at the intersection of 5th Avenue and 64th street in the borough of Brooklyn at some point early on Tuesday morning.
The New York City Department of Buildings is on the scene investigating what may have caused the ground to collapse from under the pavement.
Local media reported the cause of the sinkhole might have been a water leak that washed away the earth underneath the road.
Nearby roads have been closed and crews continue to assess the situation.
The city authorities said no injuries have been reported as a result of the sinkhole.
