US Court Allows NSA to Resume Call Records Collection

The US surveillance court approved a temporary National Security Agency collection program of domestic phone call records, according to a ruling published on Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court upheld the US Congress' June 2 passing of the USA Freedom Act the day after the NSA bulk collection program expired. Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act, allowing the intelligence agency to intercept, collect and store US citizens' phone records, expired on June 1.

"Congress deliberately carved out a 180-day period following the date of enactment in which such collection was specifically authorized. For this reason, the Court approves the application in this case," the ruling, dated June 29 and released by the Washington Post, stated.

Judge Michael Mosman thus struck down a US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruling in May that Section 215 does not authorize the NSA to collect telephone users' metadata.

"Second Circuit rulings are not binding on the FISC, and this Court respectfully disagrees with that Court's analysis, especially in view of the intervening enactment of the USA FREEDOM Act," the ruling said.
